Viking wrestlers disappoint at Tartan
North Branch wrestling head coach Tony Aho was disappointed with the results of the Tartan tournament the Vikings attended on Jan. 4. The Vikings squad came in sixth place, falling far behind Rosemount, 251.5; Irondale, 175; St. Cloud Tech, 145; Chaska, 135.5; and Tartan 134. Following North Branch were Roseville with 117 and Maple Grove with 111. Jeff Holmgren (112) finished second; John Buchanan (125) came in fourth. Fourth place titles also were secured by Cody Gallmeier (130) and Vince Zaffke (135). Joe Holmgren (145) also came in second, Alex Gerszewski (152) was sixth, Sam Suparat (160) finished third while Ed Meier (171) was fifth. Matt Davidson (189), Jarrod Swanson (215) and Jeremy Bergerson (275) all secured sixth-place spots. ìWe seemed to lose every close match, even when we took early leads,î Aho said. He said the team had been working hard, but ìit was just one of those days when nothing went right.î White Bear tourney Chris Newham (103) took sixth; Jeff Holmgren (112) was first; John Buchanan (125) was fourth; Cody Galmeier (135) was third; Joe Holmgren (140) was first; Zeb Sims (145) was fourth; Alex Gerszewski (152) wad third; Sam Suparat (160) was second; Zach Backus (171) was sixth; James Kvale (189) placed third; and Jeremy Bergerson (275) placed fifth. Junior varsity wrestlers who performed well at White Bear were: Ed Meier, first; Ed Cruz, fourth; Luke Keocher, second; Matt Davidson, first; Corey Haley, third; James Demaster, second; Jarrod Swanson, first; Nathan Holmes, third.
