Girls back on track with win over Pine City

The Rush City girls basketball squad bounced back from a loss Dec. 19 to earn another conference win Jan. 2, this one coming against Pine City.
The Tigers blew away the Dragons in the first quarter by tallying 22 points and allowing only 7 for a comfortable lead. Taking a 30-17 lead into the third quarter, Rush City continued to dominate offensively and outscored the Dragons 13-9 in the stanza.
The Dragons went on a tear and threatened to snatch the win away in the fourth, racking up 26 points in the quarter and coming within 2 points of a win. Rush City was able to hold them off, however, coming away with the 54-52 victory.
ìWe got out to a 20-point lead at the beginning of the third quarter, but couldnít keep the intensity up,î said head coach Stuart Lang.
ìPine City stayed aggressive and had a couple of shots to win it at the end.î
Scoring was spread between nine players, led by senior Maria Kuhlman and junior Christine Moore, each with 12 points.
Junior Mindy Scott added 7 points, and sophomore Holly Grimes also notched 7 points and led the team with 9 rebounds. Also scoring were senior Page Rieland, 4 points, senior Jess Prettner, 4 points, sophomore Breann Stottler, 3 points, junior Ashley Stanley, 3 points and junior Meghan OíShea, 2 points.
The win improves Rush Cityís record to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Great River Conference. The team currently sits in first place in the GRC.
This week, the team was scheduled to travel to Braham Tuesday and East Central Friday.
