Damis E. Engel
Damis Eugenia Blanch Engel died July 9, 2003 at Hillcrest having reached the age of 95 years. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 12, 2003 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rush City with Father Xavier Thelakkatt officiating. Organist was Nancy Sterk and soloist was Rob Karl. Casket bearers were Tom Shand, Ron Lambert, Warren Peters, Jim Lambert, and Dennis Swensrud. Entombment was at Resurrection Cemetery in Mendota Heights, Minn. Arrangements were by the Funeral & Cremation Service of Rush City, Minn., Olson Chapel. Damis, the daughter of Eugene and Stella (OíBrien) Lambert, was born Sept. 11, 1907 at Annandale, Minn. She grew up there and was the only girl in their family of six children. When Damis completed her elementary and high school education, she enrolled at St. Cloud Normal School, which is now St. Cloud State University. She went on to teach in in several rural schools, all eight grades in each school, in the Annandale area and in Wright County. In 1935, Damis was united in marriage to Roy Willard Rivere of Maple Lake, Minn. They made their first home in Minneapolis where Damis enjoyed being a homemaker and mother to their daughter, Lois. Damis, Roy, and Lois often went fishing together, shopped in downtown Minneapolis, and spent many weekends at Grandpa and Grandma Lambertís farm. Damis did a lot of sewing for Lois, and one of her favorite projects was baking cakes. She was an expert with a crochet hook and made many doilies with fine cotton thread. She also made tablecloths, bedspreads, pillow cases, and tablerunners. On June 11, 1956, Roy died in an accident with he was working for the City of Minneapolis. On May 26, 1962, Damis married Francis Engel, and for more than 30 years they continued to make their home in Minneapolis. They enjoyed traveling in their motor home to the Dakotas to visit relatives, and to Rush City, Minn. to visit Lois and her family. In 1993 they moved to Rush City, however, declining health caused Damis to become a resident of the Hillcrest Health Care Center. She is survived by her husband, Francis Engel, Aberdeen, South Dakota; her grandchildren: Dennis and Connie Swensrud of Rush City, Becky and Tom Shand, Sartell, Minn., Donna and Warren Peters, Rush City, Amanda Swensrud and Corey Monster, Harris, Minn.; great-grandchildren: Bethany and Zachery Peters, Samantha Shand, Chrissy and Nathan Hahn, and Ryan Swensrud; sister-in-law: Anne Lambert, Brainerd, Minn.; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Stella Lambert, her husband, Roy Rivere; daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Frank Swensrud; and her brothers, Sidney, Aaron, Quinten, Miles, and Hampton Lambert.
