Charles Edward Reding
Charles Edward Reding was born Sept. 30, 1909 to Albert and Philomena (Garrity) Reding in West St. Paul, Minn. He had four brothers and three sisters. Charles was a graduate of Cretin High School. One of his achievements during high school was ice racing on Como Lake. He played the baritone horn in the band. He also delivered newspapers for the St. Paul Pioneer Press and Dispatch. He owned Minnesota Dry Cleaners (Local #120) 633 Dale Street, St. Paul, Minn. Later he moved the business to 1099 Payne Avenue. He followed his fatherís footsteps, as Albert owned the first and only dry-cleaning business in Minnesota. He did all the dry-cleaning for many of the catholic churches in St. Paul. He also dry-cleaned all the robes for the winter carnival. He retired from his dry-cleaning business in 1974. On June 20, 1931 he was united in marriage to Jeanette (Fuos) in St. Paul. They had three sons, Francis, Robert and Thomas. The family spent their summers at their cabin on Green Lake in Chisago City, Minn. HE would bring ice out to the cabin Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. He enjoyed the weekends at the lake with his family. His loving wife of 43 years passed away April 26, 1975. An important part of his life was his church. He was a member of St. Columba parish for twenty years. Charles was Scout Master for Troop 13, President of the Holy Name Society and president of the menís club. He helped work at the state fair for many years with the menís club (which later was named the Midway Menís Club.) He was still helping at age 90. Charles married Mellsene Feb. 12, 1977. They traveled, took ballroom dancing at Arthur Murrayís dance studio, danced with the Bell Rae Square Dance Club. They also belonged to a polka club. While traveling in Russia they were 200 miles from the nuclear melt down in Chernoble. Mellsene passed away Feb. 4, 1991. Charles married Erna on Dec. 4, 1992. They enjoyed going to the senior dances. Erna had won many ballroom dance contest when she was younger. Erna passed away Dec. 24, 1995. Charlesí interests were his church, family and friends, helping people, bowling , gardening, hunting and fishing. His fishing partners were Al Carlson, Father Michael OíConner, wife (Jeanette), sons Francis and Thomas and Ed Peterson. His tomatoes, raspberries and strawberries were his pride and joy. Charles enjoyed going to the Blaine Senior Center. He liked to visit with his friends, play cards and sing. He sang the Lordís Prayer before lunch every day. When visiting in Rush City he sang the Lordís Prayer at the senior center. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated by Father Xavier Thelakkett on Monday, July 21 at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rush City. Music was provided by Phyllis Soderlund. The Casket Bearers were Ann Bushnell, Chris Basco, Steve Reding, Greg Reding, Mike Reding and Jeremy Wall, with the interment at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Rush City.
