Ottilia "Tillie" Winter

Ottilia ėTillieî Marie (Ahmann) Winter passed away on July 16, 2003, at 90 years of age. Born on September 12, 1912, she was the second child of John Henry and Mary Magdelina Ahmann. Siblings included older brother Ernest and younger brother Herbert and sister Loretta.
During her childhood years she and her siblings helped their widowed mother with the farm, located in Mahnomen County, and all the work that went with it. Her father drowned while hunting when Tillie was 12 years old. She attended the Ahmann Country School, a one-room schoolhouse, through the 7th grade as this is all farm life would allow.
She was united in marriage to Leander Winter on Nov. 11, 1933. Five girls were born to them, Celestine (a.k.a. Sally), Bernie Lou, Delphine, Carol, and MaryAnn. In the early years of their marriage they were farmers, then moved to Mahnomen to manage a business consisting of a gas station, egg candling, soft-serve ice cream, and drive-in restaurant. From there they moved to the Virginia, Minn. area, where they lived for most of their lives. During this time she was employed at the Pioneers Infirmary (nursing home) until she retired in 1970. She then devoted her time to embroidery, baking, gardening, and enjoying life.
On January 26, 1965, she was one of the first in the State of Minnesota to donate a kidney to her daughter, delphine, who today is healthy and living a full life.
Tillie is survived by her daughters Bernie Lou Winter of Rush City, Delphine (Robert) Scharber of Spring Lake Park, Carol (David) Freid of Maple Grove, Mary Ann (Rick) Drevecky of Rush City, Son-in-law Gareth Papin of Iron, sister Loretta Walz of Moorhead, Sister-in-laws Delores Ahmannof Mahnoman, Rose Winter of Inver Grove Heights, Kathryn Thelen of Maple Grove and her 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren who enjoyed her cooking and hours of playing cards. Each year she looked forward to the gathering of her daughters and their children and great-grandchildren for the annual Christmas Bake.
Her past year was spent at the Grandview Christian Home in Cambridge, Minn. There she enjoyed playing bingo, playing UNO and Skip-Bo, and baking.
Her husband, Leander, daughter Celestine, and brothers Ernest and Herbert Ahmann preceded her in death.
A Mass of Resurrection was celebrated by Father Xavier Thelakkett and Father Ralph Huar on Monday, July 21, 2003 at 7 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rush City. Music was provided by Nancy Sterk, Val Peno-Simays, Loring Olson and Rob Karl. Interment was in the Eveleth Municipal Cemetery in Eveleth on Tuesday, July 22, 2003 at 11 a.m. with Father Eamon Boland officiating at the grave.
