Sellnow is grand marshal

By Danielle Strenke
Raymond Sellnow of North Branch has been involved in various aspects of planning the annual Midsummer Days celebration for several years. This year, he will serve as its top ambassador.
Sellnow, 73, was chosen by fellow North Branch American Legion members to lead the Midsummer Days parade as the grand marshal. When he was told a couple of weeks ago that he had been chosen, Sellnow wasnít sure how to react. ìI decided I would take it, but Iím not sure yet what my duties are as grand marshal. Probably a lot of public relations,î he said.
He has been a member of the American Legion for 34 years, staying active on various boards throughout the years. Sellnow served aboard ship in the Navy during the Korean War.
Sellnow and his wife, Kay, and their family, moved to North Branch in 1957. Soon after he started working at Branch Manufacturing as a tool and die maker. Sellnow retired from Branch Manufacturing after more than 35 years, leaving him leisure time to spend with his four grown children, 10 grandchildren and four great- grandchildren.
Unfortunately, he has been spending much of his time lately recovering from a stroke he suffered in February. Before the stroke, Sellnow would go fishing or horseback riding on a daily basis, but he said right now, those activities are difficult for him. ìMy left side is pretty numb,î he said. ìItís starting to come back but itís slow. Iím limited to what I can do, but I can get around with my cane.î
Having family around helps, he said. Most of his children and grandchildren still live in the North Branch area. They are excited that he has been chosen as grand marshal, although the humble Sellnow seems to be keeping it low-key. ìMy wife thinks itís nice,î he said.
Sellnow was a regular part of the Midsummer Days for many years, riding one of his own horses in the parade. This year, he will lead the parade, which he said is his favorite part of the annual celebration. ìI donít ride any rides,î Sellnow said.
Although he is really not sure of his responsibilities as grand marshal yet - and is still waiting to see what kind of car he will ride in for the parade - Sellnow said it will be fun to take part in the festivities in this way. ìëIím looking forward to it,î he said. ìItís a nice honor.î
