Nelson served his district well
To the Editor: When State Representative Pete Nelson took his oath of office back in January, Minnesota was facing a $4.5 billion deficit ñ one of the largest in state history. While balancing this shortfall may have proved to be too daunting for some, Rep. Nelson rose to meet the challenge head-on. Rep. Nelson worked tirelessly in his role on the tax committee to solve the budget deficit without increasing the tax burden on the hard-working citizens of his district. At the same time, he focused his efforts on local projects such as the Highway 95 bridge upgrade over I-35 as a member of both the Transportation Policy and Transportation Finance Committees. As proof of his dedication and commitment to Chisago County and his local communities, Rep. Nelson authored legislation that has earned Taylors Falls a grant of $50,000 to fund fire and rescue personnel in Interstate State Park. He was instrumental in changing legislation concerning speed limits in school zones, and also worked to increase the DWI driverís reinstatement fee by $50 with revenues going to the Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Account. Throughout this session, Rep. Nelson has spoken out for the needs and values of the citizens of Chisago County. He is a valued addition to the House of Representatives whose leadership has served ñ and will continue to serve ñ the people of his district well. Steve Sviggum Speaker of the House
