Reminder on Flag Day from SOS

To the editor:
Most people seem to agree that we should promote common values that bring all Americans together. Patriotism and good citizenship are such values. I believe it is particularly important to instill and nurture these values in young people. The older generations have taken seriously their responsibility for being good citizens by serving our country in many ways, and it is inspiring now to see the younger generations embracing good citizenship with the same enthusiasm. Wherever I go, I find young people to be a very patriotic bunch, and often they tell me about the role models nurturing them ñ parents, grandparents, community leaders, and others.
Itís powerful when older people model patriotic values for young people to see and learn. Showing respect for the flag is one thing we all can do.

At this time, I especially applaud the collaborative efforts of Minnesotaís U. S. Senators, Mark Dayton and Norm Coleman, to pass a Constitutional amendment to ban desecration of the American flag. This amendment is long overdue and would demonstrate to young people our commitment to the values we hold dear.
Iíd like to remind all Minnesotans that Saturday, June 14, is Flag Day. I encourage everyone to make a point of observing Flag Day this year, by displaying the Star-Spangled Banner. Our flag has brought Americans together through history and continues to provide a timeless intergenerational bond.
