RC track faces tough competition at sections
The Rush City boys and girls track teams failed to qualify any athletes for the state meet after meeting with stiff competition at the 4A section finals Saturday, May 31 at Macalester College in St. Paul. The section meet is traditionally extremely tough for the Tigers. The athletes must compete against several private high schools, which seem to dominate the competition every year. Head Coach Mike Vaughan did not have any official results from the meet available at press time, but said he was pleased with how well the athletes performed. To advance to the section finals, the squad claimed several top finishes at the subsection meet May 21 at Ogilvie. For the girls, Alex Saxton took first in the 100 dash with a time of :13.32. Christine Frandsen claimed first in the 1600m run with a time of 5:36.75 and first in the 3200m run with a time of 12:34.17. Britta Johnson was first in the 200m dash with a time of :27.93, second in the 400m dash with a time of 1:04.11 and sixth in the triple jump, with a jump of 30í1î. Heather Dean took first in the 400m dash with a time of 1:04 and sixth in the long jump, with a jump of 13í11î. Breanna Launderville was fifth in the 800m run with a time of 2:50.27. The 4 x 800 relay team of Amber Hoffman, Becca Rogers, Kelly Moore and Breanna Launderville finished third with a time of 11:41.45. The 4 x 100 relay team also finished third with a time of :54.74. The team includes Christine Moore, Amy Bengtson, Heather Dean and Alex Saxton. The 4 x 400 team of Hoffman, Launderville, Dean and Britta Johnson took second with a time of 2:00.27. None of the boys squad advanced to the section finals. Individually, Brett Dreissig was fourth in the 300 hurdles with a time of :4536 and Josh Dahl was fourth in the 3200m run with a time of 11:10.87. Dreissig was also fifth in the 110 hurdles with a time of :17.50, and Dahl was fifth in the 1600m run with a time of 5:22.93. Jeff Jennings was fifth in the high jump, clearing 5í4î and Noah Reichert was fifth in the 3200m run with a time of 12:01.01. As a team, the girls squad finished in fourth place at subsections while the boys team finished fifth. The section finals ended the successful high school track careers of the only two seniors on this yearís team, Brett Dreissig and Britta Johnson.
