Tiger boys fall in quarterfinals

The Rush City boys basketball team came away with a 67-64 win against Minnesota Transition in the qualifying round of the subsection playoffs March 4 to advance to the quarterfinal round.
The Tigers played a solid first half, holding the slight 16-15 edge after one quarter but falling behind 25-16 in the second to trail 40-32 at halftime.
The team came back in the second half to score 20 in the third and 15 in the fourth. ìWe had a big second half, outscoring a very talented Transition team 35-24,î Head Coach Gary Dreissig said.
The second-half offensive onslaught was spurred by 4 three-pointers from Kellin Sybrant, who totalled 15 points in the win. Three other players made it to double figures: Brett Dreissig with 16, Kyle Mold with 13 and Andrew Kaufmann with 10. ìWe again had very good balanced scoring,î Dreissig said.
Mold led the defense with 9 rebounds, followed by Dreissig and Kaufmann with 8 each.
The win advanced the Tigers to the quarterfinal round where they faced No. 3 seed East Central March 6.
East Central came out ahead 55-39 in the contest to end the Tigersí season.
After trailing 18-9 after one quarter, Rush City battled back to outscore the Eagles 12-7 in the second quarter to trail by only 4 at 25-21.
East Central came back with a big 16-point third quarter and held Rush City to only 8 to seal the win. The Eagles added 14 to Rush Cityís 10 in the final stanza for the 55-39 win.
ìOur defense did a good job but our offense struggled to get good looks at the basket,î Dreissig said.
ìWhen you only get 35 field goal attempts for the game you know your offense is in trouble.î
Mold led the team in scoring with 18 points, followed by Sybrant with 9, Dreissig with 8 and Kevin Bengston and Kris Guentzel with 2 each. Dreissig also led the team in rebounds with 10, while Joe Prettner picked up 6.
Dreissig said the team played hard, but it was a frustrating season. Despite coming away with 14 losses, however, the Tigers total points for all games this year were only 2 points less than its opponents totals.
