Urges yes votes on womenís bills

To the editor:
Itís a pity that Sen. Sean Nienow (R-Cambridge) missed the debate on SF 269 and SF 270 last Thursday in the Health and Family Security Committee of which heís a member.ÝI observed the entire hearing, and I urge the senator to vote yes when these bills come to the floor.
To briefly review, SF 269 asks health plan companies to cover prescription contraceptives (not over-the-counter items).ÝNot only does it make good sense to prevent unwanted pregnancies, but also it makes sense that companies covering Viagra costs for men should cover prescription contraception costs for fertile women too.
SF 270 is the Sexual Assault Victims Act of 2003 that requires hospital emergency rooms to provide emergency contraception and information to victims. Dr. Lynn Hagedorn reported that current research shows that drugs given to a victim within 72 hours of rape inhibit fertilization of the egg and thus prevent conception. If the egg is already fertilized, the drug wonít interfere with the pregnancy.Ý
Yes votes make sense.
