Volunteer chooses Crisis Nursery

To the editor:
In a volunteerís words . . . I have been a volunteer with Childrenís Home Society of Minnesotaís Crisis Nursery of Chisago/Isanti Counties since 2000. I wish I could tell you that I have some extremely noble reason, such as to change the world, for why I choose to volunteer. But, I donít. In fact, my reason for volunteering could be considered a bit selfish. Simply stated, I volunteer with Crisis Nursery of Chisago/Isanti Counties because it gives back an enormous amount to me.
What does volunteering for the Crisis Nursery of Chisago/Isanti Counties give back to me?
By volunteering with the Crisis Nursery of Chisago/Isanti Counties, I feel as though I am an active member of my community. After all, it takes a village to raise a child, and if I live in the village, shouldnít I help the children? A community is only as strong as its members. By volunteering, I feel that I am helping to make our community stronger for everyone.
Through my volunteer opportunities with the Crisis Nursery of Chisago/Isanti Counties, I have been able to identify and let go of negative biases that I had formed about others. Biases such as, ìIf that parent has money to smoke, then he/she has money to feed his/her children.î Volunteering has helped me to realize that I do not have a right to judge others or their actions. The only shoes I have walked in are my own.
Most importantly, volunteering with the Crisis Nursery of Chisago/Isanti Counties gives me an enormous amount of hope. Hope when I see others helping the children of our community to thrive. Hope when I see a hurt child feel safe enough to come out of his/her protective defenses and act as a child should. Hope that my communityís children will grow up healthy and strong and, in turn, help their own communities in the future.
The children of this community are the future of the world. I feel a responsibility to do my part to enrich their lives. The Crisis Nursery of Chisago/Isanti Counties allows me the opportunity to give back to my community, while at the same time giving me so much more! April 27 will be the CHSM Crisis Nursery 5th annual fund-raising event.
