Make a last-minute effort
Youíve been hearing about the cuts to the programs for the poorest of our society, those less able to get around than others, the children, youths and families, so now, in the last minutes of the Legislative session, you must try to contact your legislators to express your concerns for these cuts. They must realize that cutting funding to afterschool programs, shelters, volunteer organizations, etc., will only hurt us all. No one wants higher taxes, but sometimes it might be the only way to solve a problem. There has to be a way to balance the budget without taking from those who already have less? Legislators, please try to find that solution. Remember, a just society takes care of its most vulnerable citizens, a just society sees to it that programs are available for children who need to be occupied while parents are working, a just society funds services for the disabled and seniors, a just society tries to level the field between those who have and those who have not. Justice is not charity. We are our brothersí keepers and we are all responsible for the condition of humanity. It we provide some assistance to those in need, so that they can pick themselves up and walk beside us, then we are about justice for all. Make a call or send an e-mail and tell your legislators you donít want them to balance the budget by harming your neighbor.
