Boys golf stays in the hunt at RRC meets

In the world of high school golf, two teams cannot end a meet in a tie. If a schoolís team of five golfers finishes with an identical round as an opponent, first place is awarded based on the sixth golferís score.
Unfortunately for North Branch, the result of two ties last week ultimately led to second place finishes in consecutive conference meets.
Last Tuesday, the boys golf squad faced Mora and Milaca. Both North Branch and Mora finished with rounds of 165, but Mora was awarded first place by one point as its sixth golfer finished with a 46 to North Branchís 47.
Tom Koep led the Vikings and was the medalist at the meet with a 36 on the Milaca course. Tony Beaver turned in a 40, Tyler Leland had a 44 and Bryan Peters and Darrin May each had rounds of 45. Nick Lindberg was the sixth golfer with a round of 47.
Two days later, North Branch was in the same situation, turning in a 165 and tying Foley for first in the tri-team meet. Foley earned first by winning the tie-breaker of the sixth-person score.
Koep led the team again, with a 38. Leland turned in a 39, May had a 43 and Beaver and Lindberg both had rounds of 45. Peters finished with a 47.
The teams fared well in multi-team meets May 2 at Mora and May 5 at Cambridge.
At the Mora Scramble, the team of Koep, Lindberg and May finished with a 139 for fourth place out of 24 teams. The trio of Peters, Beaver and Leland turned in a 141.
At Purple Hawk, the six team members finished with a 361 team total for 15th out of 24 teams. They were led by Leland with an 87.
This week, the team winds down its regular schedule with a meet at Chisago Lakes Tuesday and the Rum River Conference meet Thursday at Pine City.
