Tennis prepares for sections

The North Branch boys tennis is winding down to its last week of regular season play, and Head Coach Mike Lizotte is seeing some of his players step it up to make a strong run at section play.
Last week, the squad lost a 4-3 match to Chisago Lakes. Lizotte said he knew the meet would be decided on one match going into the day.
Matt Fletcher earned the only singles point for the team, defeating Kyle Nelson in two sets. ìMatt was on and off the court very quickly, winning easily,î Lizotte said. ìHe seems to bring his same game to the courts every day. He has improved both his ground strokes and his serve this year, which makes him a very tough out.î
At No. 1 doubles, Craig Beecher and Steve Goranson played their best match of the year, winning in three sets. ìThey kept the ball in play and didnít make many errors,î Lizotte said. The No. 2 doubles team of Rolando Leal and Lance Arbogast also won in three sets.
Lizotte said Britt Baumann struggled at No.1 singles, but hopes he can step up his game as the team enters subsection play next week.
This week, the squad ended its regular season with matches Tuesday against Cambridge and Thursday against St. Francis before starting subsection team competition Tuesday, May 20.
