Baseball tallies 13 hits in win over Isle
Last week, the Rush City baseball team lost its second game in a row before bouncing back to defeat Isle Monday. A 7-6 Tiger lead evaporated in the final inning May 6, as Aitkin pulled away for an 8-7 win. Rush City held the 7-6 lead through the top of the seventh, but allowed 2 Aitkin runs in the bottom of the inning for the Gobbler win. It was a poor defensive showing for the Tigers, Head Coach Bob Schlagel said. ěThe first six runs by Aitkin were unearned. We had routine plays but failed to get outs. You canít give the opposition extra outs and expect to win.î Junior Brent Freeman had 2 of the Tigersís 5 hits. Senior pitcher Derek Benson was strong on the mound, taking the loss. A May 9 game against Ogilvie was rescheduled due to inclement weather. This week, the team rallied to snare a big Great River Conference win, defeating Isle 14-5 Monday. Rush City totalled 13 hits in the victory, adding up to runs in six of the seven innings. The defense also looked much improved, turning two double plays to stop Isle. Benson had his best offensive game of the year, with 4 hits including 3 doubles and 4 RBI. Freeman had 3 hits and earned 2 RBI, junior Kellin Sybrant had 2 hits including a double, and freshman Adam Best had 2 hits and a double. ěWe were very happy with our offense,î Schlagel said. The Tigers improved to a 5-3 record in the GRC, 7-5 overall. This week, the team takes on Ogilvie Wednesday, East Central Thursday and Hinckley-Finlayson next Monday.
