Helen NewtonHelen Elizabeth Newton, age 82, of Cambridge, died May 20, 2003 at Grandview Christian Home in Cambridge. Visitation was held on May 22 at the Strike Funeral Home-Cambridge Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, at the Cambridge United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Venneman officiating. Interment will be in the Strike Cemetery in Bradford Township. Helen was born July 16, 1920 at Minneapolis to Clarence and Mabel Bailey. Her father was treasurer of M & St. L. Railroad. She was raised in Minneapolis and graduated from South High in 1937. She attended one year at the University of Minnesota. Helen worked at Daytonís Department Store. On Feb. 20, 1943 she married Rev. J. Marshall Newton at Temple Baptist Church in Minneapolis where they had attended Sunday School together since they were children. Helen served as a pastorís wife and homemaker as they served 11 different Methodist Churches in Ohio and Minnesota from 1947 to 1972. Helen worked in the health care industry for several years as a nurses aide and then as director of central services at Mercy Hospital. She taught sterile supply at 916 Vocational School until retirement in 1985. Helen volunteered as a receptionist at Lakeside Christian Church at Cambridge for 15 years until taking up residence at Grandview Christian Home. Besides her parents she was receded in death by her husband, Rev. J. Marshall Newton and by one brother and one sister. She is survived by one daughter, Bonnie Fields of Minneapolis; five sons, Roger (Joanna) of North Branch, Stephen (Laura) of Cambridge, John (Mary) of Chaska, David (Mary Ann) of St. Paul, Timothy (Mary Beth) of Cambridge; by 25 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Winifred Sykora of Eagen; brother, Roger (Peg) Bailey of Oceanside, Calif.; and by many other relatives and friends. ©ECM Post Review |
