Baseball has perfect week
The Rush City baseball team scored 28 runs in two games to sweep a double header against Wrenshall May 3. The Tigers blew Wrenshall away 9-4 in the first game, then came back for a football-like 19-8 score in the second. In game one, the Tigers scored in five different innings. The offense was led by John Bosman and Jeff Hrdlichka, who both came up with 2 hits and 1 RBI. Kellin Sybrant added a double and 2 RBI. Josh Munchow was on the mound for Rush City, pitching seven strong innings for the win. He chalked up 11 strikeouts, allowed only 3 walks and gave up 5 hits. He pitched through 6 shutout innings before Wrenshall came up with its first runs in the seventh inning. ìJosh pitched very well in this game,î Head Coach Bob Schlagel said. ìWe were able to score runs early and Munchow was able to hold them in check.î Rush City crushed Wrenshall with 14 hits and 19 runs in the next game for the two-game sweep. After Wrenshall took a commanding 7-0 lead in the top of the first, the Tigers answered by tying it up with 7 runs in the bottom half. ìWe could have given up, but I give credit to the kids, they came back strong,î Schlagel said. Hrdlichka had 3 hits in the game, including 2 doubles and 1 RBI. Bosman and Benson also had 2 hits, Bosmanís included a double for 2 RBI. Mike Shively came up with his first hit of the year for the Tigers, coming in the sixth inning and knocking in 2 runs on the double. Earlier in the week, the Tigers racked up 26 runs in two wins, over Hinckley-Finlayson and Onamia. Against Hinckley, Rush City scored 2 runs in the second, 3 in the fourth, 4 in the fifth and 3 in the sixth. The team took advantage of several wild pitches from the Jaguars, coupled with several key hits including hits from Dustin Willert and Adam Best. The squad had 3 doubles and 1 triple in the win. Benson was on the mound, pitching his best game of the season. He went 7 innings, giving up 4 hits while striking out 3. He also had a strong day offensively, coming up with a double and 2 RBI. Willert led the offense with 3 hits and 4 RBI, while Best had 2 hits. ìIt was our best game of the year,î Schlagel said. ìWe had timely hitting along with great defense and a great pitching performance from Benson.î The offense kept it going the following day by chalking up 19 hits, including 5 doubles. A total of 9 runs came on 10 hits in the fourth inning alone, including 7 hits in a row. Bosman, Willert and Best had 3 hits apiece, while Brent Freeman, Dylan Lindman and Hrdlichka each had 2 hits. ìIt was our best offensive day of the season, scoring 14 runs on 19 hits,î Schlagel said. ìBut our pitching gave up 9 walks, which is too many. We need to cut down on the free passes.î This week, the team was scheduled to take on Aitkin Tuesday and Ogilvie Friday in two away games.
