RC softball picks up one win, one loss on the week
The Rush City softball squad fell to Ogilvie May 1 before rebounding with a win against Wrenshall May 2. The Lions came up with two runs in the second after both runners reached on errors to take a 2-0 lead that eventually led to a 4-1 win. Both runs were driven in on singles. Another Rush City error contributed to another base runner in the third who eventually scored to give Ogilvie a 3-0 lead. The Tigers were finally on the board with a run in the fourth inning, starting with a double from Holly Grimes. She advanced to second as Jess Prettner reached on an error and came home on an attempted pick-off play at third base. The Lions added a final run in the seventh inning for the win. The Tigers suffered through 8 strikeouts and collected only four hits. Prettner, Meghan OíShea and Nicole Meis all contributed singles, while Grimes had the lone extra-base hit for Rush City. ìOgilvie had a great game, getting nine hits and two errors,î Head Coach Rick Kosloski said. In the 10-9 victory, Rush City exploded with 7 runs in the bottom of the first inning, coming on three hits, two walks and an error. Breann Stottler and OíShea reached on singles, and were driven home on a big 3-run home run from Samantha Saxton. Wrenshall came up with 1 in the second, and Rush City answered with another in the third. Wrenshall went on a rally with 5 runs in the fifth, but a third out strikeout from pitcher Page Rieland ended the threat at 5. Leading 8-6, Rush City expanded its lead with two more in the fifth, one coming as Stottler performed heads-up base running at third base. As the Wrenshall pitcher failed to check to see if she was standing off the bag, Stottler was able to steal home. Wrenshall battled back to within one with 3 more in the sixth, but again a strikeout ended the threat and gave Rush City the 10-9 win. ìSaxtonís homer really ignited the team in the first inning,î Kosloski said. Rieland, Mindy Scott and Shannon Karvonen shared the pitching duties in the win for Rush City. Offensively, OíShea led going 2 for 4. On April 28, the Tigers picked up a big 8-4 conference win against Hinckley-Finlayson. In that game, the Tigers scored first with a run in the first inning, but was answered quickly by 3 Hinckley runs in the inning. Rush City came back to tie the game at 3-3 with two runs in the second off of two walks to Sandy Johnson and Saxton. Both scored on Stottlerís single to center field. The Tigers came up with 2 more in the third to take the lead again, off of singles from Scott and Rieland. They added 2 more in the sixth and 1 in the seventh for the win. Stottler, OíShea and Rieland tallied two hits each. The games left Rush City with a 4-3 conference record, 5-4 overall. This week, the squad faced Aitkin Tuesday.
