Sincere thanks to all veterans

To the editor:
On Nov. 11th every year, we honor our dignified Veterans who have served this great country. I want to extend sincere gratitude to our communityís Veterans who have given years of their lives for freedom,
democracy, and self-determination. These grand principles have motivated soldiers in defense of the United States for more than two centuries, from Revolutionary militia to Civil War soldiers at Fort Snelling, and from the World Wars to the Vietnam War and the Gulf Wars. Thank you to Chisago County veterans for your service, and for your continued dedication to the highest ideals of our democracy.
Veteranís Day also honors the armistice signed in 1918 to end the first Great War (now known as World War I). Congress established the national day of observance to mark the end of ìthe most destructive and far reaching war in human annals, and (to honor) the resumption by the people of the United Sates of peaceful relations and other nations, which we hope may never again be severed. The anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding.î
Unfortunately, at least five wars since 1918 prove that peace remains elusive.
Regardless of oneís feelings about the current war in Iraq, I believe we are all united in the hope that our new veterans will return home safely to their families and to our communities. On behalf of all of Chisago County, I want to extend my sincere thanks to the servicemen and servicewomen risking their lives in Iraq, and to their families waiting anxiously for their return home. Rest assured that our thoughts and prayers are with you in a difficult time.
On Veterans Day 2003, thank you to all those who serve and who have served, on behalf of liberty and democracy. May we all continue to work for peace through good will and mutual understanding.
