North Branch senior signs to play at Southwest Minnesota State

Southwest Minnesota State University menís basketball head coach Greg Stemen announced today that Matt Fletcher, a 6'2", 185 lb. senior guard from North Branch, MN, has signed a letter of intent to continue his academic and basketball career at SMSU.

Today is the first day of the NCAA early signing period for menís basketball. The early signing period for student athletes ends Wednesday, Nov. 19.

Fletcher, who is in his senior year at North Branch High School under head coach Bill Baumann, has had an outstanding high school career and is just 77 points shy of 1,000 career points. Last season he helped lead North Branch to the Rum River Conference championship and a runner-up finish in the Section 6AAA playoffs.

He finished the season averaging 18.8 points and 5.1 rebounds per game while shooting 45.7 percent (80 of 175) from three-point range and 78.7 percent (107 of 136) from the free throw line.

ìMatt is a great shooter which was our number one priority heading into this recruiting class,î said Stemen. ìWe lose Jared Keaveny and Rory Larson to graduation next season so weíre extremely excited to have Matt sign. He has great range and is an outstanding competitor and all-around athlete.

Fletcher, who was named honorable mention AP All-State last winter, is a two-time first team All-Conference selection and was also the starting quarterback on the North Branch football team this fall.

Fletcher said he would like to study education and coaching at Southwest, but expects athletics ìwill always be part of my life.î
