A communication breakdown

To the editor:
Clearly the kids that were at the lock-in on Homecoming had fun, but were throughout the evening wondering where were the rest of the kids? I, as a parent, have had my whole family volunteer every year for this event, knowing we are making a difference in the community for our youths because we have always had over 400 youths attend. This year, due to the announcement at school, we had the lowest attendance we have ever had since we started offering the lock-in, we had just over 150.
Several children were expressing they wished more of their peers had attended.
As a parent I do this because I know first hand what can happen to our youths (my husband is a corrections officer for the prison). My concern is if they werenít at the lock-in, where were they? Were they OK? Would they have come had the announcement at school been more specific? We were all trying to have a positive attitude for the ones who were there. However, it was heavy on our minds as to the safety of the ones who werenít there.
Therefore, Community Ed, work with us, not against us.
This is not about evangelizing the youths to be Catholic.
In fact, usually the youths that attend, many of them have never been to a church.
It is about respect for self, respect for others, respect for staff and the facility.
The way that our lock-in is offered, all ages from 6th grade all the way up through 12 grade and then all the adults are all working together having a great time getting over the age barriers.
We have never had a problem, that is, until this year. Can we please not have this happen again, for the childrenís sake?
