Three strikes, you should be out

To the editor:
The Census Bureau released information last Friday that poverty had increased and median income had fallen. This should be no surprise to anyone, given the state of the economy. What should be alarming is the response by both the Bush and Pawlenty administrations.
They should be engaged in counter-cyclical measures in-stead of cutting taxes on the rich. At what point should we be asking our government to change its course. When the job losses reach the highest level since the Great Depression? Well it has!
Besides the record job losses, high unemployment, escalating national deficits, look at what is happening to non-profits, foundations and churches. Were they not suppose to benefit from the Bush tax cuts? Wasnít the Bush invasion of Iraq suppose to revive the economy? And what about the war in Iraq? Didnít Bush declare victory last May? We may have won a war, but most would agree we have not won the peace or stopped the threat of terrorists; they havenít even apprehended Bin Laden or Hussein.
In fact, think about the hundreds of billions of dollars this war is costing Americans; to achieve what? And the debt our children will have to pay?ÝThere were no weapons of mass destruction found. Every day more American soldiers are killed. What if that money had been spent on eradicating hunger in the world or to peacefully promote cultural understanding and world trade? Do you think that would have produced a better outcome than what was achieved by destroying much of the infrastructure of Iraq and now being responsible for rebuilding it?
And since we did not have the support of the UN in our invasion, why should we expect much cooperation from the rest of the world now? My reading is that Bush has struck out on the economy, foreign affairs and the environment. Three strikes and you should be out.
Gov. Pawlenty has done the same. His claim to fame is no new taxes, actually it is reduce the taxes on the rich and ignore the needs of the citizens, education, etc. His other accomplishment is putting more handguns on the street and in peopleís houses with the very real likelihood that more people will be killed at their own hands or by persons unable to control their anger, such as happened in Cold Springs.
Enough is enough.
