Girls capture first at St. Johnís Boyís team takes close second
The Rush City cross country teams proved that hard work does pay off, as the teamís goals of finishing as a pack were rewarded homecoming week. Both the girls and boys teams fared well at the St. Johnís Invitational Sept. 25, with the girls squad capturing first place at the meet. Led by junior Christine Frandsen with a first place finish, the varsity girls team totalled only 40 points in the meet for first place overall. Maple Lake was second with 54 points and Onamia was third with 109 points. Frandsen completed the race in 16:29. Kayla Witte was fourth at 16:57, Brittany Frandsen was tenth at 17:41, Becky Kemen was 11th at 17:43 and Amber Hoffman was 14th at 17:57. Head Coach Kevin Smith has been working with the team members to stick together throughout races, and it paid off at the St. Johnís Invite. ìWe had good pack running by both squads today,î he said. ìThe girls had four of five scorers within one minute of each other, and three within 16 seconds. We need to stay with our teammates to minimize our score.î Josh Dahl led the boys varsity with a sixth place finish at 18:23. Zach Johnson was 14th at 18:57, Justin Jacobson was 15th at 18:54, Noah Reichert was 16th at 19:37 and Matt Wuorinen was 18th at 19:41. ìThe second through fifth runners were within 43 seconds of each other ñ it was a great team effort,î Smith said. On the junior varsity side, the boys also had a strong showing. Josh Erickson was third at 20:04, Jon Meis was fourth at 20:15 and Alex Saumer was fifth at 20:38. For JV girls, Kelly Moore was the top finisher, in fourth place at 18:22. Michelle Stenger led the junior high race, capturing first with a time of 14:16. She was followed by Samantha Gorman in second at 14:41. In the boys race, Andrew Buchholtz was third at 13:48. Also last week, the teams competed in the Milaca Mega Meet Sept. 20, billed as one of the countryís largest cross country meets. The Tigers competed against up to 212 other runners in each race. Races were divided by grade for the junior high level, and a varsity race for high school runners. Smith said the teams turned in very respectable times overall. ìWe generally finished in the top third to top half,î he said. ìEvery runner had the chance to pass opponents from the first step to the last step.î Individual recognition goes to Stenger, taking 38th out of 151 runners in the seventh grade race, Brittany Frandsen, 39th out of 159 in the ninth grade race, Dahl, 10th out of 209 runners in the ninth grade race and Christine Frandsen, 40th out of 212 runners in the varsity race. This weekend, the teams take part in the Swain Invitational in Duluth Saturday, with races starting at 10:00 a.m.
