RC blasts Zimmerman 25-6 to end regular season

The Rush City football squad ended its regular season last week with its sixth win of the season. The 25-6 victory came over Zimmerman, in its first year of high school competition.

The Tigers came out ready to play on the opening drive of the game, as Brent Freeman completed at 54-yard pass to Kris Guentzel for a touchdown in the opening minutes. Tim Morris kicked the extra point for a 7-0 Rush City lead.

Morris then picked up an interception for Rush City that led to the teamís second TD in the quarter. Tim Karnick ran the ball in from the 4-yard line for the score, but the PAT was no good for a 13-0 lead.

The Tigers added a third touchdown in the quarter, started by a 16-yard punt return to the 30-yard line from Kevin Bengtson.

Willie Barth tallied two carries in the series, for 19 yards and 11 yards and found the endzone from 2 yards out for the score. Again, the extra point was no good, ending the first quarter in a 19-0 lead for Rush City.

Neither team scored in the second quarter. Karnick compiled runs of 39 yards and 8 yards in the third quarter on a series that ended with Freeman running the ball in from the 2-yard line for the Tigers. The extra point attempt was no good, giving Rush City a commanding 25-0 lead.

Late in the third quarter, Zimmerman picked up its lone touchdown, but was unable to add the two-point conversion. Rush City went away with a 25-6 victory.
ìIt was a good game to end the regular season with,î Head Coach Gary Wendorf said. ìThe kids played well and almost all of the players that dressed got into the game. Offensively, the first quarter was one of the best weíve had all year.î

Karnick had 102 yards rushing for the Tigers, while Barth added 84 yards rushing.

The win wraps up the regular season for Rush City with a 5-1 record in the Great River Conference, enough for a second place finish, and 6-1 overall.

This week, the team started playoffs as the No. 3 seeded team in section 4AA. The Tigers faced No. 6 St. Croix Lutheran at Rush City Tuesday, Oct. 21 in quarterfinal action.
A win would put the team into the semifinal game Saturday, Oct. 25 against the winner in the No. 2 Breck versus No. 7 Braham game.
