Donít want children left behind
To the editor: We are writing this as concerned parents and members of a great community and country. Of which, we are all members and therefore responsible for the continued growth, prosperity and general well-being of our fellow citizens both young and old. There has been some negative affirmations about the new school that is to be built in North Branch. It is amazingly sad that some people choose not to see the benefits of progress in our community. First and foremost, the fact of the matter is that the majority of the voters in this community has the wherewithal and vision to vote for the new school building. Therefore the new building will be built like it or not. This however, does not bode well for those who did not vote for the new building because they feared the grim reaper of capitalism, the tax man. Or for whatever other reasons they could give for voting away 65 percent of the cost to build, that the state is now paying. From a visionary point of view this would seem more like a tax windfall than like a tax burden. Most people would love to have someone else pay 65 percent of the mortgage on a new house. Now that the plans have been drawn and ground is broke there still seems to be some sniveling about the design or look of the building. Some may feel that it looks to fancy or expensive. Those who have vision will see that if you are going to build something then why not have it look nice as well. Donít we all like to have nice buildings? Like cabins, boats, four-wheelers, snowmobiles, or whatever else tickles oneís fancy. Why would anyone build a house and not put a window in it or a coat of paint on it? This is all silly nonsense, we voted to build a new school for our children and it should be a practical center for learning, as well as a nice looking addition to our community. Now comes the time where we are called again to step up to the communal plate for our children, our way of life and vote for the new operating levy. This is for the daily operating expenses of our school district. We are again fortunate to have the state pay 50 percent toward the levy for our school district. What a great tax savings this is going to be for us. Not only is the state paying 65 percent for a beautiful new school in our community, it is also willing to share half the financial burden for operating funds we vote on that will also benefit our children. Some people would say that they will not vote for the levy because the school has cut recess our for the kids. This is foolish nonsense, one of the sort, that by cutting off oneís nose simply to spite their face. Who wouldnít want someone else to pay half their bills for their household expenses. Rest assured that if we as a community donít take the matching monies that is on the table offered via the state treasuries some other community that is looking beyond their front door will. They will take the money and run toward new growth and prosperity leaving the laggards behind. Being left behind is not what we want for our children and community. If you think the cost of education is expensive, rest more assured that lack of education leads toward a greater expense for us all both fiscally and communally. Bryan and Donna Hubbard North Branch
