Beauty and the beetle
I love this time of year, I wish I had time to get out and enjoy it. The trees are just about to their peak in colors, this weekend should do it. Some trees gave up waiting for water and dropped their leaves green. It seemed like a cartoon situation: one day full foliage, the next poof, a bare tree with a pile of leaves below. But other trees are waiting to show off their fall glory in one last effort to stake a claim in natureís gallery. Thereís a stretch of maples along County Road 7, also known as Rush Point Drive, west of Rush City that is spectacular in the autumn. If youíre up in the area this weekend, youíll be in for a treat. They were nearly gorgeous this morning. Then there is the Hogsback Road, also known as Cedarcrest Trail, or County Road 8, where you can drive through a winding, picturesque pathway ablaze in golds and oranges in a day or two. Downtown Rush City sports some magnificent trees, also, just about as beautiful as they can be. Actually, folks in Chisago County donít have to travel up north for the beauty of the season, we have it right here, almost everywhere you go. Along the eastern edge of the county the colored trees even provide an opportunity for Taylors Falls to celebrate with a festival that runs through this coming Sunday. What a nice thing for nature to do for us, give us this lovely landscape, just before she turns on us and blasts us with the cold and grey of winter. Of course, there are a few drawbacks. Thereís the raking and the bagging and the disposal of all those lovely fronds, which, after they are deposited on the ground, turn brown and crunchy. The crunchy is nice, though, especially if youíre a kid and enjoy a romp in a big pile of raked leaves. Iím sorry, I just canít stay gloomy about autumn, even with the additional chores. Now, I talked with Sharon Stanius yesterday, an ECM employee at the Scotsman/Isanti County News and we both lamented over the bees and the coming of the beetles, whatever their name. I guess weíll just have to pass around remedies for getting rid of the critters and make the most of these last few glorious days. I love the beauty of autumn, and I wonít let a few beetles spoil it for me.
