RC volleyball struggling through tough schedule

Rush City volleyball fought out a tough match against Aitkin last week, but their efforts just werenít enough to come out on top.
The Tigers fell to the Gobblers in the Sept. 30 competition in four games: 11-25; 25-19; 19-25 and 12-25.
Coach Michelle Kirby said the team played well at times during the matches, but fell short of strong plays.
ìOur passing struggled tonight and our offense still needs some work,î she said.
The teamís work improved their results in the Oct. 2 match-up against East Central, even though Rush City lost again.
The scores for the four games were 25-16, 22-25, 21-25 and 22-25.
Kirby said the close scores made for exciting matches.
Senior Mindy Scott earned 15 kills and had a great defensive night, Kirby said.
Sophomore Shannon Grimes is showing sheís ready for just about any challenge with 9 kills and a great blocking night, Kirby said.
Senior Lindsey Hanson had her first start of the year for the Tigers and proved herself by playing well for the team, Kirby said.
ìEvery player did their job tonight,î Kirby said. ìOn paper we should have won, but I was really pleased with the effort from all the girls.î
In the Sept. 23 match against Isle, the Tigers again lost, but had a good showing.
Grimes led the team with 6 kills on the night. Senior Sandy Johnson also earned 6 kills and played a well-rounded game, Kirby said. Scott pulled down 4 kills and turned some great defensive plays.
The Tigers next face Hinckley-Finlayson at home on Thursday. The Rush City Tournament is Oct. 11 and the team travels to Pine City Oct. 13, then wraps up the weekís matches at home against Braham on Oct. 14.
