Taxpayers robbed by gang of three
To the editor: By now you are probably aware of the great robbery that has been forced upon us by 3 of our county commissioners to the tune of about $1,000,000 a year for the next 20 years starting in 2005. The millions are to be spent to increase the size of the countyís libraries not just twice, but eight times larger than what we now have. These millions do not include hiring more staff and buying more books to fill the increased library space which they certainly will ask the taxpayers to fund. I believe this huge library increase is not needed. All of our schools have libraries. School kids are taught computer skills early on in school. More and more families have computers at home and more information is on the computer everyday. I believe that for these reasons the need for huge libraries will decrease instead of increase all of this comes at a time when many of us are severely hurting financially. I personally know two families that are being taxed right out of their homes. (One family moved to Utah, the other to South Dakota.) This in itself is a crime against our retirees who have spent a lifetime building Minnesota and now have to move away just to survive. As for myself, I will not give up my home easily. I will remember at the voting booth. Starting in 2005 we will all remember twice a year for 20 years. A tax increase of this magnitude should have been put to a vote of the people, but that was not allowed by Commissioners Montzka, Olseen, and Walker. It was pushed thru against the vote of Commissioners Robinson and Gustafson. We can be thankful that we have these two commissioners that at least try to look out for the taxpayers of the county. We donít need politicians who live by a spend-spend-spend philosophy! John Tidgwell North Branch
