Not the true spirit of democracy

To the editor:
A small group ofÝsupporters succeeded to convince three commissioners to proceed with the bonding to build the new libraries. The Minneapolis libraries shut down over the Holiday week and many surrounding cities and counties are shortening their library hours to conserve funds. Does Chisago County really need four libraries within less than a half hour drive of each other? It was reported that Mr. Montzka voted against a referendum because the county operates as a representational democracy. This is true, but while Mr. Montzka was acting on behalf of a small group of supporters, he knew very well that the rest of the county was expecting a referendum and thatÝthe referendum would have failed. Pushing this through with only a 3-2 vote and without a referendum is certainly not what one could consider the true spirit of a representational democracy. Itís Mr. Montzkaís job to represent all of the people.
