Runners improve times at Rice Lake
Although the teams did not qualify for a first place finish at the Rice Lake Invitational, the Rush City cross country teams continue to improve on individual times. The squads competed at Rice Lake Sept. 16, turning in strong performances while running next to teams from larger schools. The invite places all class runners in the same races, while they are ranked separately at the finish line. The result is a race where division one schools like Rush City have runners in the pack with division two schools. ìThe runners were constantly surrounded by competition from the start to the finish,î Head Coach Kevin Smith said. ìThey gain valuable experience this way as they must keep pace or fall back.î He saw several runners step up and improve their times as a result of competition at the meet. Overall, the girls varsity squad took fourth out of 11 teams in the meet. Christine Frandsen led the girls with a fourth place finish at 16:45. Kayla Witte was 12th, with a time of 17:17. Also competing for girls varsity were Brittany Frandsen (18:06), Amber Hoffman (18:07), Becky Kemen (18:52) and Tegan Smischney (23:39). For junior varsity girls, Kelly Moore was fourth with a time of 19:21 and Michelle Stenger was sixth with a time of 19:43. Josh Dahl led the varsity boys team, with a time of 18:22 and enough for a seventh place finish. Zach Johnson finished second for the varsity boys, at 19:52. Also running the boys race were Justin Jacobson (20:14), Matt Wuorinen (21:27) and Noah Reichert (20:40). In the boyís junior varsity race, Jon Meis led the way with a second place finish, at 20:21, followed by Josh Erickson in 10th at 21:34 and Scott Englund in 11th at 21:50. Capturing first place honors at the meet for boys varsity was the team from Grantsburg, followed by Boyceville in second. The girls team from Bruce took top honors in the varsity competition, followed by Boyceville in second. Smith said it was overall a good meet for the Tigers. ìWe were very pleased with the results our kids reached today,î he said. ìWe are seeing improvement week to week as we enter the second half of the season.î Also last week, the teams took part in the Milaca Invitational Sept. 20. This week, the team travels to the St. Johnís Invitational Thursday, Sept. 25.
