Smart play brings Vikes win

The North Branch girls tennis team rebounded from a tough loss to St. Michael-Albertville last week to defeat Princeton 5-2.
The Vikes faced Princeton Sept. 16 and turned in outstanding play at all positions.
At No. 2 singles, Maren Anderson came back from a 1-4 deficit in both sets to win both 6-4 for the match win.
Danielle Sonnenfeld also won for the Vikes at No. 4 singles, in sets of 6-0, 7-6.
All three doubles teams swept their matches. ìAll three teams played great,î Head Coach Kristin Unverzagt said. ìFelicia and Chantell came back to win 7-5 in the second set with great net play.î
Felicia Dehart and Chantell Sampson won in 6-2, 7-5; Nicole Granberg and Katie Satterlund won in 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 and Amber Heilig and Jessica Johnston won in 6-4, 6-3.
Shannon OíHern turned in a solid performance at No. 1 singles but came out on the short end of a 5-7, 6-2, 5-7 loss. ìShe had a great second set,î Unverzagt said.
She added that all the players played great and worked hard in the Vikings victory.
The team went on to lose 5-2 in a tough match to Pine City Sept. 18.
ìThe girls played hard, and overall it was an awesome effort by all of the girls,î Unverzagt said.
Shannon OíHern faced a state-ranked player at No. 1 singles, falling 0-1, 1-6. Anderson came from behind after losing the first set 4-6 to win the next two 6-3, 6-0 for the match.
The other win for the Vikes came at No. 4 singles, as Sonnenfeld defeated her opponent in two sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Despite three losses, Unverzagt said the doubles teams played hard with great intensity. Rodrigue also lost in exhibition singles play.
This week, the squad played one of its most important matches of the year in the Rum River Conference tournament, held Tuesday at St. Michael-Albertville. The Vikes close out regular season play with two matches next week.
