Tigers crush Lions, move to 4-0 in GRC

The Tigers made it 4-0 with a 14-6 win over Onamia Sept. 17 as the squad moves into Homecoming week atop the Great River Conference.
Rush Cityís defensive came out tough, holding the Lions scoreless through three quarters.
In the first quarter, the Tigers defense prevented an Onamia touchdown, despite Onamiaís field position on the 4-yard line on first and goal.
The Tigers struck first in the second quarter, as quarterback Brent Freemanís 37-yard run set up a 4-yard touchdown run by Tim Karnick on the following play.
Tim Morris kicked the extra point for a 7-0 Rush City lead.
The defense came through again in the third quarter, as Ray Grabau recovered an Onamia fumble in the endzone on second and goal for the Lions.
Onamia came within one with touchdown on a fumble recovery in the fourth quarter, but was unable to tie it up as Mike Wuorinen sacked the quarterback on the two-point attempt.
Holding the 7-6 edge, the Tigers sealed the win later in the fourth as Karnick scored on a 26-yard touchdown run.
Karnick broke two tackles as he made his way to the end zone. The TD run came after a nice drive that includes two carries from Willie Barth of 12 yards and 10 yards.
The touchdown was followed by a Morris kick, giving Rush City the 14-6 win.
Head Coach Gary Wendorf said it was a hard-fought game. ìWe played well, stopping them twice inside the five,î he said. ìItís good to see how the kids react in a close game when it comes down to the end of the game.î
Barth led the offense with 103 yards, Karnick picked up 86 yards and 2 TDs and Freeman added 61 yards.
Wuorinen and Grabau were credited with a quarterback sack each, and Adam Best and Morris each had an interception. Wendorf said the defensive line really stepped up its play for the game.
The win brings Rush Cityís record to 3-0 and puts them in first place in the Great River Conference.
This week, the Tigers face Ogilvie in the Homecoming game, Friday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m. Fridayís festivities also include a parade at 2:15 p.m. along Fourth Street and a pig roast from 4:15 to 7:00 p.m. at Rush City High School.
