Letter- Soldiers should be brought home

To the editor:
The Bush administrationís justification for the U.S-led invasion of Iraq featured claims that Saddam Husseinís regime was 1) stockpiling and planning to use chemical and biological weapons, 2) reconstituting a nuclear weapons program, 3) seeking weapons-grade uranium from Africa, and 4) maintaining contact with and training Al-Qaeda terrorists.

The American people were informed that Iraq threatened both the entire world and especially the U.S. But four months after unleashing the assault on Iraq, and more than two months after Pres. Bush announced victory, coalition forces continue to scour the country seeking evidence to support these claims. The evidence has not been found.

Nevertheless, more than 150,000 American military personnel remain in Iraq. They are being attacked daily and the toll of dead and wounded continues to rise. Their presence generates anti-Americanism among the Iraqi people.

And their mission has been changed from soldier to policeman. Before more of our soldiers are killed, and before growing anti-Americanism spawns further terrorist attacks here at home, American forces should be brought home.

The President and the Congress should then pledge that our nation will never again go to war without the formal congressional declaration required by the Constitution.
