Rev. Thomas L. Delk

Rev. Thomas Leland Delk died of cancer Monday, Aug. 18, 2003 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah at the age of 65.

Tom was born June 16, 1938 in Greenville, Ohio to Dawn and Clara (Thomas) Delk. He was baptized in Greenville, Ohio and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Brainerd, Minn. He graduated from Brainerd High School with the class of 1956.

He graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN with the class of 1960 and then attended Hamma Theological Seminary on the Wittenburg University campus in Springfield, Ohio, graduating in 1964.

He was united in marriage with Eileen R. Johnson on June 29, 1963 in Webster, SD at American Lutheran Church.

Tom served as assistant pastor at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church in northeastern Minneapolis, Minn. from 1964 until 1969 and then accepted a call to serve at First Lutheran Church in Rush City, Minn. from 1970 through 1982. At that point he went to Vasa Evangelical Lutheran Church is Vasa, Minn., serving there for 10 years.

Next he moved to serve at First Lutheran in Flanagan, IL for 7 years. After that he moved to Normal, IL for a year-long residency in Clinical Pastoral Education at BroMen Hospital. He then spent the next nine months at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lincoln, Ill. as an interim pastor. When he moved to Decorah in June of 2001 he became the chaplain at Aase Haugen Home, where he served until his death.

Tom was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Decorah, the Luren Singing Society, and he was an associate member of the Association of Professional Chaplains. His hobby was railroading and he loved to travel. He was a resident of the Aase Haugen Home since Aug. 9, 2003.
