OpinionLetter- Special Olympics was successfulTo the editor: Wally is the only local athlete to be selected to join more than 900 other athletes from Minnesota and across the country to represent the United States at the Special Olympics World Games held in June in Dublin, Ireland. Wally returned with a bronze medal, a 4th place ribbon and a 6th place ribbon. Wallyís coach, North Branch High School teacher and wrestling coach Tony Aho, was honored during the picnic for his selfless act of coaching Wally in his free time. Athletes, their families and several members of the general public came to Central Park in North Branch on Aug. 28 and ate picnic foods and participated in fun games like a water balloon toss and marshmallows-on-a-spoon race. Thank you to the local businesses who contributed to the event to make it a great success: Jim and Carrie Jorgensen, North Branch Dairy Queen; the American Dairy Association; Kathy Lindo and Arlys Walberg, North Branch Area Chamber of Commerce; Leo Johnson, Frito-Lay; Don Kivimaki, Signature Dining; AgStar; ECM Publishers; and The Flower Shop. The picnic will be held again at the same time next summer and everyone is invited to attend. Mary Determan ©ECM Post Review |
