NB Volleyball opens with 2 losses

An inexperienced varsity squad had some rocky moments in the first two matches of the season for the North Branch volleyball team.

The Vikes suffered losses in matches against Totino-Grace and St. Francis to conclude its before-school schedule. Both were non-conference games.

North Branch was downed in three games against Totino Aug. 26 under the newly-adapted scoring for Minnesota high school volleyball. Scores were 25-17, 25-11 and 25-15.

Rachel Brown led the team in kills with 5, and was 21 of 28 in hit attempts. Abby Fairbanks had 22 set assists.

It was a three-game loss Aug. 28 to St. Francis as well. The squad fell 25-18, 25-15 and 25-16.
In the match, Jenny Anderson led in kills with 8 and was 12 out of 15 in hit attempts. Kaity Vichorek added 4 kills, and Fairbanks had 18 set assists.

Head Coach Jim Van Eerden knew it would be a difficult way for the team to begin the season. ìBoth Totino and St. Francis are much improved over last year, and Totino participated in the state tournament,î he said. ìWe need to improve our passing and serving.î

This week, the squad faced Irondale in a home match Tuesday and travels to Chisago Lakes Thursday.
