Annexation reform must be passed

To the editor:
Chisago City is attempting to annex 11,103 acres of Wyoming Township in a manner that gives township residents little that they need in exchange for higher taxes, street assessments and the gradual surrender of their quality of life.
Wyoming Township residents are opposed to the proposed annexation but according to current Minnesota law, such annexation is a purely administrative process for which resident approval is not required.
As Minnesotaís population grows and urbanization trends continue, more and more communities will be faced with similar annexations in which their residents have no voice.
To instill the democratic process in contested case annexations, the state legislature must pass much needed reform during the 2004 legislative session.
