To the editor:
I am writing this letter to voice my concern with the legislation to make the shooting of mourning doves legal. Why would people want to shoot these birds? It is beyond my comprehension. Is it for meat? Or is it for target practice?
Have people forgotten the demise of the carrier pigeon many years ago? At one time there were millions and now they are extinct. Will that be the story of the mourning dove?
Many things have harmed the different birds in our area, such as destroyed habitat, pesticides, weather, etc. Some of these birds were bald eagles, blue birds, Peregrine falcon, the blue herons, etc.
So people banned DDT, built blue bird houses, rescued wounded hawks and eagles, built nests for the falcons, reclaimed habitat for different bird and animals.
Now are we going to put another bird on the edge of extinction? Please voice your objection to the killing of mourning doves. Please let the hunters find something else to use for target practice, like skeet shooting.
