Rush City opens with twice the fun in double header wins

The Rush City baseball squad opened its season with a doubleheader against Wrenshall April 8 in Rush City. The Tigers came away with two shutout 10-0 wins.

In the first game, Rush City scored 4 runs in the first inning en route to a 10-0 victory in five innings of play.

Junior Adam Risland contributed the key 2-run single in the inning to get the Tigers going. A double from senior Brent Freeman in the second inning scored 2 of Rush Cityís 3 runs in that inning.

The squad came through with 2 more runs in the third, led by a triple from Freeman to drive in 1 run.

Senior Kellin Sybrant knocked in the teamís last run with an RBI single in the fourth inning.

Junior John Bosman went four innings on the mound for Rush City, allowing 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 8.

ìHe pitched very well while picking up the win for us,î Head Coach Bob Schlagel said.

Freeman and senior Andew Kaufmann led the offense, both coming up with 2 hits and 3 RBI in the game.

ìJohn did a nice job of pitching and throwing strikes for the most part,î Schlagel said. ìDefensively we played well but we have a long way to go in this area of the game. Offensively, we looked at too many pitches and we had a number of hitters who were off balance.î

The Tigers took a quick break and came right back offensively in the second game, racking up 7 runs in the second innning.

The runs in that inning came on several walks and also singles from Kaufmann, Freeman, Tony Webb and Dan Gamache.

Sophomore Adam Best pitched 6 innings for Rush City, giving up no hits and 2 walks while striking out 13.

ìHe did a great job of keeping the opposition off the bases,î Schlagel said. ìIt was a very nice game for his opening game of the 2004 season.î

Schlagel will look for the team to find more consistency in the batterís box as the season progresses. ìWe will have to work through some of our bad habits as we go,î he said.

Freeman led the offense once again, this time picking up 2 hits, including a double and a single.

Rush City takes its 2-0 record to face Ogilvie April 13 and return home to face Hinckley-Finlayson Thursday, April 15.
