The Rush City softball team started its season with a pair of games last week, coming away with two tough losses.
The Tigers opened its regular season with a 12-10 non-conference loss to Barnum April 6.
Barnum took an early 4-1 lead after one inning and added 4 more in the second, 2 in the third and one each in the fourth and sixth. Rush City tallied 3 in the second, 2 in the fourth and 4 in the fifth.
The Tigers struggled at the plate, coming up with only 5 hits. Junior Breann Stottler was 2 for 3 including a triple and senior Sandy Johnson was 2 for 4 including a homerun in the second inning. Sophomore Laura Gamache added a single.
Senior Shannon Karvonen took the loss on the mound, allowing 9 hits while striking out 6.
The Tigers went on to host Wrenshall April 8, falling 8-3.
Rush City opened the scoring with a run in the first off a single from Stottler and an RBI single from senior Ashley Stanley.
Wrenshall tied it up with a run in the second and went ahead 2-1 in the third. The Tigers answered with 2 runs in the third, coming off a double from junior Jenny Benson and a double from senior Meghan OíShea.
After Wrenshall added another run in the fifth to tie it at 3-3, the team capitalized on Rush City errors to add 2 runs in the sixth and 3 in the seventh for the 8-3 win.
Rush City committed 5 errors in the loss and tallied 6 hits. Johnson was 2 for 3 at the plate and Stottler, OíShea and Benson added one hit each.
Karvonen, pictured here, pitched the complete game for Rush City, giving up 5 wild pitches and striking out 5.
This week, the Tigers were scheduled to face Ogilvie Tuesday and then host Hinckley-Finlayson Thursday, April 15. The team travels to Pine City Monday, April 19.
