Rush City crushes Onamia 19-0

The Rush City baseball team went 2-1 in a trio of games during the past week, including an impressive 19-0 romping of Onamia Monday.
The squad picked up its third win of the season in an 8-3 win over Ogilvie April 13.

The Tigers took a 4-0 lead with 4 runs in the second inning. Key hits in the inning were a double from senior Brent Freeman and a single from junior John Bosman, both scoring one run.

Rush City added 2 more in the fourth off consecutive hits from senior Kellin Sybrant, sophomore Adam Best and Freeman.

Junior Tony Webb hit a single in the fifth to knock in another run for Rush City and the final run for the Tigers came on errors in the inning.
The Lions answered with 2 runs in the fifth and 1 run in the seventh but Rush City came out with the 8-3 win.

Bosman pitched 7 innings for the Tigers to earn the win, giving up 4 hits, walking 5 and striking out 8. He also had 2 hits and an RBI on the day.

Freeman was 2 for 4 including a double and had 2 RBI.

ìWe played very well defensively,î Head Coach Bob Schlagel said. ìWe made the plays when we had to and had no errors. If we get good pitching like we did today combined with good defense positive things will happen.î

A strong offensive showing from Hinckley-Finlayson handed Rush City a 4-2 loss April 15.

The Jaguars collected 11 hits on the day from sophomore pitcher Adam Best.

Hinckley started it off with 3 runs in the first inning. Rush City came within 1 with 2 runs in the fifth inning.

Junior Dan Gamache and senior Kris Guentzel both singled and a walk to junior Adam Risland loaded the bases. Sybrant doubled to right, scoring Gamache and Guentzel.

The Jaguars added 1 run in the seventh for the 4-2 win.

Despite the loss, Schlagel was pleased with the pitching of Best. ìA number of times he worked out of trouble to keep the score close,î he said. ìHe pitched well enough to win but we could not get the key hit when we needed it.î

The team was definitely able to come up with key hits in an 18-hit game against Onamia Monday, coming away with a big 19-0 win in five innings.

Rush City had 5 runs in the second, 6 runs in the third, 7 in the fourth and 1 in the fifth.

The 18 hits were spread between eight players on the squad. Freeman was 3 for 4 including a double and had 2 RBI. Sybrant was 3 for 5 including a triple, had 3 RBI and scored 3 times.

Senior Andrew Kaufmann, Best, Gamache and Guentzel had 2 hits apiece and Webb added 1 hit.

Bosman picked up the win for the Tigers, giving up only 2 hits, walking 2 and striking out 4. Noah Reichert pitched the fifth inning in relief for Rush City.

ìIt was nice to see us break out with 18 hits on the day,î Schlagel said. ìWe had great production from the bottom part of our lineup which was great. We need our entire lineup giving us quality at-bats every time up.î

The games bring Rush Cityís record to 2-1 in the Great River Conference, 4-1 overall.

This week, the team will face East Central Thursday on the road. Next week, the team travels to Isle Tuesday, April 27.
