A brief groundbreaking ceremony was held last Thursday evening for the new North Branch Area Library to be built south of the fire hall along Forest Blvd. Among those celebrating the historic moment were (l to r) KKE architect Sarah Weiner, Cole Oehlers (digging in red shirt), Sen. Sean Nienow, Rep. Pete Nelson, Verna Hoppe, City Councilwoman Kathy Blomquist, Commissioner Lora Walker, library supporter Linda Prince, librarian Sue Monroe, Mayor Gloria Karsky, East Central Regional Library director Bob Boese, Councilman John Pace, Jr., Councilwoman Amy Oehlers, Commissioner Rick Olseen and NB City Administrator Joe Lynch. The new library will have 14,000 square feet, nearly three times the space of the current downtown library. Chisago County bonded for $6.5 million to build three new libraries (Wyoming and the Chisago Lakes area also) and for the purchase of and upgrades at the Rush City library. About three dozen supporters were on hand for the ceremony, all were invited back to the present library for refreshments afterwards.
