On the Nessel Township audit Ý ÝÝÝ

To the editor:

Concerning the Nessel Township audit, the cost was nearly $25,000, $24,660 to be exact.ÝThis was for the years of 2000, 2001, and 2002.Ý

The main reason the cost was so high is because documents and records that should have been kept were not, and the Auditorís office spent a lot of time trying to find bills and invoices that were not available.ÝIt was so bad they finally wound up restructuring the whole system and putting nearly everything on the computer.Ý

After all, when the old board wrote thousands of dollarís worth of checks, with no record of what they were for, and then did not reconcile the check book for two years, it does get a little scary.ÝThere seemed to be no accountability or responsibility by the board to have things done right.

We have since aquired an excellant clerk in Helen Leier and a treasurer in Mary Rahman, who knows where every penny is coming in and going out.ÝMary shows the Board and the public the figures every month.ÝYou can find a copy of the treasurerís report and bills to be paid, and the minuteís of the last monthís meeting, on the table as you come into the Town Hall, every month.ÝA far cry from what it used to be. Have a good day.
