Young eyes watched in amazement as the bubbly foam filled the test tube in front of them and nearly filled it to the top.
After being told the liquid was vinegar, the young scientists quickly deduced that the powder must have been baking soda.
The experiment was held during Tracks and Traces event July 12 at the Chisago County Senior Center.
Sponsored by the Friends of the North Branch Library, the traveling Science Museum of Minnesota hands-on lab taught about 30 youths in the area about how to follow clues, use deduction, apply scientific procedure and collect evidence.
Everyone at the event, young and old alike learned something new. Fingerprints can never go away; never. No matter what you do to them.
No matter how clean you think the floor is, there is always some residue left behind that will give away who has been on it.
Itís almost impossible for you to go anywhere without leaving something about you behind.
Proctored by Jeff McLennan, an outreach teacher with the Science Center, the lab taught youths to use their five sense to help collect evidence.
They used their new techniques at stations including on that matched ink footprints to shoes and gave them a chance to look at different kinds of fabric and dirt under the microscope.
The lab is traveling the state under a grant in conjunction with library reading programs.
