On Aug. 7 at Olson Field in Sunrise, Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 684, will host a picnic and the Freedom Flight hot air balloon. This is the 15th anniversary of the local veteranís group and will include a hog roast beginning at 1 p.m.
The picnic will be for Vietnam veterans and their families, and people are asked to bring their own beverages and lawn chairs. It will be a day of honoring past and present veterans and the continuing efforts being made to not forget POW-MIAs.
Manley and Benetta Olson have offered free camping spots less than a mile from the picnic location. Weather permitting, picnic attendees may be able to take a ride in the Freedom Flight hot air balloon (tethered) for a donation. Freedom Flight entirely volunteers who dedicate their time, talent and money to fly three POW/MIA hot air balloons at various events. Olson Field is located in Sunrise: from North Branch go east on Hwy. 95 for 9 miles to County Road 9, go north for 2 miles to Sunrise.
