Free throws made the difference as the North Branch girls opened their season in the win column with a 49-42 victory over the Forest Lake Rangers on Nov. 23.
The see-saw contest saw multiple lead changes and runs by both teams. North Branch opened with a 6-2 lead, but Forest Lake made a 9-0 run to lead 11-6 after one quarter.
North Branch stormed back in the second quarter, outscoring Forest Lake 18-4 and taking a 24-15 lead into the locker room at halftime. But the Rangers turned the tables on the Vikings in the third frame and took a 30-28 lead late in the quarter until the Vikes scored the final four points to regain the lead 32-30 at the end of three. North Branch outscored Forest Lake in the fourth quarter for the win.
North Branch shot 19 of 27 at the charity line while Forest Lake made 5 of 6.
The Vikings were led by Gabrielle Olson and Tiffany Good with 15 and 13 points respectively. Jenny Anderson pulled down 16 rebounds and scored 6 points while being double-teamed all night. Jill VandenHeuvel grabbed 9 rebounds and scored 8 points in her first varsity start.
ìTheir pressure gave us some trouble but I think we wore them down as the game went on,î said Coach Dan Schindler. ìWe stress getting to the line and it was the difference again tonight. It was a great win for us over a quality opponent. They were bigger and stronger than us, but we held in there and got the W.
