How does a team overcome a first quarter marred with turnovers, poor shooting and fouls?
It doesnít. At least, the Rush City Tigers couldnít on Dec. 3, losing to Onamia 38-51 in a game where they trailed 28-6 at the end of the first quarter.
ìWe have got to get off to a better start in the first quarter,î said Coach Stuart Lang. ìHaving 16 turnovers in the first quarter and shooting under 20 percent for the game isnít going to win you many games.î
The poor performance followed a close game earlier in the week, when the Tigers narrowly lost to Hinckley-Finlayson 59-55 on Nov. 30.
Like they did against Onamia Rush City came out with the doldrums in the first quarter against Hinckley-Finlayson, scoring 8 points to HFís 14.
But they picked it up in the second quarter with a 20 point burst, and trailed at halftime 28-29.
The third quarter saw little scoring by either team, with RC putting in 7 points and HF 10. Each team scored 20 in the final frame.
The Tigers led with only 1 minute left in the game but could not hold off the Jaguars.
Breann Stottler was two assists shy of a triple double, contributing 25 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists. Becky Kemen shot a blistering 100 percent on 3 pointers, going 3 for 3 and ending with 12 points.
