Tourists donít come to see houses
To the editor: To the people who spoke at the commissionersí meeting Feb. 4 expressing the belief that though they themselves did not live on the Sunrise River, the people who did must be against the moratorium. I do live on the Sunrise and I speak for many of our neighbors, we wholeheartedly supported the moratorium. The river desperately needs protection, growth desperately needs to be planned. The rumors that it was five years and other campaigns of fear are terribly destructive. One year or less was not much considering the long-term effects. Not many people have such pressing needs that a yearís wait would make the kind of difference that unplanned growth would. Preservation increases land value. The Conservation Fund, a pro-development environmental group has the statistics to back that up. As well as many suggestions for small communities struggling to change from mostly farmland to residential. We can develop and grow without destroying the environment that makes Chisago County the most visited day trip destination in Minnesota (U of M study). The tourists donít come to see house after house and do bring lots of cash. A small aside concerning Lin Strong. I am sorry she did not get the position she sought but application by deadline or not is not a guarantee of appointment. To answer a letter from last week, of course commissioners appoint those who reflect their own points of view, it is their obligation and how a representative form of government works.
