Vikes earn 41-21 win in tough dual

Head Coach Tony Aho knew going in that a dual meet against Rush City would be a tough battle. He also knew that his team was up for the challenge. The Vikings earned a 41-21 win against the Tigers Feb. 3.

North Branch started off with two hard-earned pins from Cory Crowell, 103 lbs. and Matt Newham, 112 lbs. Also earning wins for the Vikes were Josh Schwab, 125 lbs., won by decision; Ryan Decorsey, 140 lbs, won by decision; Cody Gallmeier, 145 lbs., won by major decision; Joe Lofboom, 152 lbs., won by decision; Zach Backus, 189 lbs., won by decision; Jeremy Bergerson, 215 lbs., won by forfeit and Jarrod Swanson, HWT., won by forfeit.

ěRush City has a good group of kids and a class coaching staff,î Aho said. ěEven with their two forfeits they put a good team out on the mat. Their guys were ready and came out very aggressive.î

Aho was pleased with the effort from Crowell, Newham, Decorsey, Gallmeier and Lofboom and has seen improvement from Backus as the season progresses. ěIf they can maintain their work ethic they will be able to move to the next level,î Aho said.

North Branch went on to fall to St. Michael-Albertville 64-6 Feb. 5 at a quad meet.

Earning the lone win for the Vikings was Bergerson, who won by decision. North Branch was forced to forfeit at 130 lbs.

In the next match, North Branch earned a big 36-24 win over Elk River. Notching wins for the Vikes were Newham, Greg Arnt, 130 lbs., Decorsey, Gallmeier, Lofboom, Cory Haley, 189 lbs., Bergerson and Swanson.
ěThis was a huge win for this team,î Aho said. ěAll of the guys contributed to the strongest effort we have seen all year.î He said Bergersonís come-from-behind win proved that he should do well in the upcoming section tournament.

In itís last match of the night, North Branch fell to Watertown-Mayer 52-19.

Earning wins for the team were Sam Suparat, 160 lbs., Haley, Bergerson and Swanson.

ěThere were plenty of opportunities to steal wins from this very solid team, but I think the boys were just spent by that time,î Aho said.

The squad will now work to get ready for the section team tournament, set for Fri., Feb. 20 and Sat., Feb. 21 at Coon Rapids. The individual sections will be Feb. 27-28 at Grand Rapids.
